Pordenone Province
This landlocked portion of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia
region was created from the much larger province of
Udine in the late 1960s.
Today, it’s home to nearly 300,000 residents, most
of whom live in the small towns that dot this famous
wine region or work at or near the NATO-controlled USAF
Air Base at Aviano that once pointed missiles at the
Soviet Union.
The area is best known as an Italian portal to skiing
resorts in the Alps, many of which are world famous.
The capital city of Pordenone is actually more of a
large town. It was a medieval river port that was formerly
an agricultural area dotted with Roman Villas. Once
part of the kingdom of Venice, this town has always
had a thriving trade industry, despite being inland.
The area of the province around the capital is renowned
for its Chianti and other world-famous wines produced
here.
Culinary delights of the region include several local
varieties of cured ham products.
