Roma Province

Nearly all the residents of the province of Roma live in the city of Rome ( Roma ) itself, though many of the 121 towns in the Lazio Region are more like suburbs of the city than autonomous towns in their own right.

The population density in Roma Province is the highest in Italy because of the nearly four million people crammed into a few thousand square miles.

The only towns that can be considered rural are those in the very northern part of the province.

The city of Rome itself isn’t actually on the Tyrrhenian Sea, but is relies upon port cities like Ostia and roads that have been used for thousands of years to keep the population to get goods to market in this “eternal city” .

It is nearly impossible to walk anywhere in Rome without coming face-to-face with art, culture and cuisine.  It is also famous for completely surrounding the separate nation of The Vatican City and St. Peter’s Square.

Days Out in the Roma province
>> The Museo Nazionale Etrusco in Roma - housed in a 16th century Papal building that is now public property, this museum is entirely devoted to the history and artefacts of the Etruscan civilization.

>> Black Beaches of Fiumicino - conveniently located in the same town as the very busy Leonardo di Vinci Airport, you’ll find iron-rich sands on some very decent beaches.

>> Hadrian’s Villa - located 30km outside the city of Rome, the villa of the Emperor famous for building the wall between Scotland and England is kept in garden-worthy shape for thousands of visitors each year.
>> Velletri - this is one of the most rural areas in the entire province and an important area of winemaking.  Be sure not to miss the artichoke festival if you’re visiting in March.
