Ragusa Province
On the southern coast of Sicily ( Sicilia ), the province
of Ragusa is actually quite agricultural for one with
such dramatic hills within its interior.
Pickles are the region's speciality as are the many
local cheeses that you'[ll find being used at the local
restaurants (of which there are many).
The area has frequent volcanic activity so only the
strongest buildings have remained during the countless
major shake-ups.
The capital city of Ragusa is the largest, though just
barely, with two other towns that are nearly as large.
One of the oldest sites of settlement, Ragusa is an
ancient city dates back 4,000 years though none of the
tribal architecture remains.
It has been the victim of several massive earthquakes,
the most important of which happened in the late 17h
century. Many of the buildings found in Ragusa city date
from this rebuilding. Visitors today will find a very
quaint town with a unique take on the usual baroque
cathedrals found elsewhere in Italy complete with massive
decorative columns that imitate the Greek columns found
at the ruins.
