On the east-central Adriatic coast of Italy, the region
of Abruzzo is a 125 square-km (48 square miles) area
with coastline, plains and the many hills and peaks
of the picturesque Apennine Mountains.
This region is further divided into distinct provinces.
L'Aquila is the largest and interior province. On the
coast, there is Teramo to the north, Chieti in the centre
and Pescara to the south, bordering modern Molise.
Because it is so rugged, it is a wonderful place for
alpine hikers, with over one third of the land area
covered by parks.
Many castles still dot the landscape and there are
several ski resorts to choose from. One of the region's
major parks is the wetlands created from the lakebed
of the former Barrea Lake.
Endangered species that call Abruzzo home include many
waterfowl and the European brown bear.
There has only recently been much tourism in the area,
so people here sometimes speak a dialect that’s a bit
difficult to understand. Don’t expect to find everyone
speaking English here.
