Guides & Maps on Basilicata

Matera

This is one of only two provinces that make up the remote region of Basilicata on the south central coast of Italy.

Of the two, Matera has the advantage of being the province with a coastline on the Gulf of Taranto (part of the Ionian Sea).

Of the 31 towns in the province, the namesake city is the largest, though certainly not a large town.  This is one of the least populated regions in the entire country and is relatively unspoiled by international tourism.

The area is best known for its natural beauty and agriculture (especially farm animals and grapes), though in recent years, it has become the home of furniture upholstery.

The region is now known as an emerging site of Italian tourism with beaches and resorts.

The local cuisine relies heavily on seafood and the coastal towns are known for fish dishes.  Local wines are also popular in the region, but relatively unknown outside the local area.

Days Out in the Matera province
>> Cave Churches and Sassi of Matera - in the largest town of the province, you’ll find thousands of cave dwellings, some made by monks and others built to house residents and their livestock on the hills in a tremendous feat of engineering.

>> Beaches and resorts of Maratea - here dense forests come right up to the rocky coast and open up to warm beaches that Italians flock to in the summer months

>> Domenico Ridola National Museum - in Matera you’ll find a very comprehensive museum of ancient artefacts from a private collection donated nearly 100 years ago.
>> Ruins of Hereclea - just outside the town of Policoro, this was the site of a famous battle in 280BC between the Roman Republic and Confederated Greek States.
