Potenza Province
This southerly province of Basilicata is largely land-locked
and very geologically active. It is also quite large,
covering over 6,500 square kilometres. As such, it is
also quite mountainous and sparsely populated.
The largest city is Potenza, also the provincial capital.
It resides as the highest elevation of any provincial
capital in Italy, at nearly 820 metres.
The city of Potenza, with nearly 70,000 residents has
been rebuilt many times after significant quakes such
as those in the 17th, 19th and 20th centuries.
Volcanic eruptions and earthquakes have affected much
of the region heavily at one time or another.
This, coupled with heavy World War Two bombardment,
has left many of the larger towns to be rebuilt in a
very unfortunate modern style with the old buildings
in ruins.
The smaller villages are much more likely to have ancient
or medieval architecture in tact. Mount Blanc is the
tallest mountain peak in the area.
