This mountainous region, known to the Romans as Lucania,
lies north of the Ionian Sea.
Basilicata is one of the least populated region's of
Italy being nearly 10,000km square (3860 square miles)
in area with fewer than 600,000 people.
This is in sharp contrast to the coastal plain of Puglia
to the East and home to millions. Basilicata is divided
into to the provinces of Potenza and Matera on the sea.
The highest peak in the area is Monte Pollino of the
Apennine Mountains chain at over 2230m (7320 ft.).
Though traditionally quite poor, the area has been
expanding recently due to the discovery of oil in the
area. Seafood and egg pasta are the region's speciality.
