Guides & Maps on Basilicata

This mountainous region, known to the Romans as Lucania, lies north of the Ionian Sea.

Basilicata is one of the least populated region's of Italy being nearly 10,000km square (3860 square miles) in area with fewer than 600,000 people.

This is in sharp contrast to the coastal plain of Puglia to the East and home to millions. Basilicata is divided into to the provinces of Potenza and Matera on the sea.

The highest peak in the area is Monte Pollino of the Apennine Mountains chain at over 2230m (7320 ft.).

Though traditionally quite poor, the area has been expanding recently due to the discovery of oil in the area. Seafood and egg pasta are the region's speciality.

Days Out in Basilicata
>> Craco - Adventurous explorers might want to try the hike up to the ancient village of Craco, abandoned after severe earthquake damage. Be very careful, as the climb is steep and some buildings are not safe

>> Sassi of Matera - These unique homes (also called “Tufo” by locals) are carved out of the unique white rock of the area and are several thousands of years old. The town has been a UNESCO world heritage site since 1993.

>> Castle at Melfi - An important strategic town in the middle ages, the large castle that dominates the local landscape was built by the Normans in the 13th century
>> Resorts of Maratea - Among the most pleasant resorts on the Ionian Sea, Maratea has amenities at very reasonable prices that are unspoiled by tourism, though the beaches are somewhat rocky.
