Cosenza Province
This province is located on the very bottom of Italy’s
Tyrrhenian Coast, with another coast on the Ionian Sea
to the south and east. It has been continually inhabited
for over 3,000 years, though probably much longer.
Many of the nearly three-quarters of a million inhabitants
are ethnic Albanians, and many continue to speak a dialect
of the language over 600 years later.
As a whole, the province is mountainous with dual coastlines.
The capital city, also named Cosenza is tucked into
the mountains where two rivers converge. The city is
known for its intellectual and arts scene as well as
breathtaking views.
Despite its access to coastline, the region has traditionally
been rather poor, partly due to regular outbreaks of
malaria in the low-lying areas where the population
congregated and partly due to its resistance to various
invasions from all sides.
The swamps were drained in the 19th century and Cosenza
is becoming a more popular tourist destination with
resorts popping up in coastal areas.
