Reggio Calabria Province

This province, located at the very tip of Italy’s “boot,” is the second most populous and perhaps, the most well-known, being a short journey from the much larger area of Napes to the north.

The region is known for its regular earthquakes and tsunami, which have levelled the capital repeatedly.

As such, it is one of the poorest provinces on the Italian mainland as a function of per capita income.

Tourists, however, are beginning to flock to the 200 km long coastline punctuated by citrus and olive groves as well as vineyards and in the middle of the province you’ll find the terminal Aspromonte peaks that give way to oceans on three sides.

The regional capital is the oldest city in the region, with ruins that date back nearly 3,000 years when it was known to the Greeks as Rhegion.

This is the port from which visitors usually cross the Straits of Messina to the island of Sicily.  Though not the capital of the Region of Calabria, the city is home to the Regional Council of Calabria.

Days Out in the Reggio Calabria province
>> Church of Saint Gaetano Catanoso - this second Reggio Calabria-native saint was canonized in 2005, and though he died in 1963, visitors still file past his glass coffin in hopes of another healing miracle.

>> Wineries of Locride - the famous Greco di Bianco desert wine is produced here from semi-dried grapes of ancient Greek origin.  This southern coast is also known for its oranges.

>> The Reggio Calabria Planetarium - open to the public on the weekends, this is the largest observation point in the region and has been very recently modernized for visitors.
>> Gambarie - this little mountain village is a great place to stay while visiting the recently created National Park of Aspromonte or visiting the local ski resorts in the winter months.
