Reggio Calabria Province
This province, located at the very tip of Italy’s
“boot,” is the second most populous and perhaps, the
most well-known, being a short journey from the much
larger area of Napes to the north.
The region is known for its regular earthquakes and
tsunami, which have levelled the capital repeatedly.
As such, it is one of the poorest provinces on the
Italian mainland as a function of per capita income.
Tourists, however, are beginning to flock to the 200
km long coastline punctuated by citrus and olive groves
as well as vineyards and in the middle of the province
you’ll find the terminal Aspromonte peaks that give
way to oceans on three sides.
The regional capital is the oldest city in the region,
with ruins that date back nearly 3,000 years when it
was known to the Greeks as Rhegion.
This is the port from which visitors usually cross
the Straits of Messina to the island of Sicily. Though
not the capital of the Region of Calabria, the city
is home to the Regional Council of Calabria.
