Vibo Valentia Province
This small province, located just north of the tip
of Italy’s “boot,” Vibo Valentia was created in 1992
from the larger Province of Catanzaro to the north.
The region remains quite poor, though it has recently
had a boom of German tourists and sun worshipers.
Like many of the surrounding regions, locally consumed
seafood as well as the agricultural commodities of citrus,
almonds, olives, grapes and dates, support the economy
along with tourism. Indeed, olive oil is one of the
province’s main exports.
The provincial capital is by far the largest in the
region and has over 33,000 inhabitants. It has been
known since Greek times as Hipponion, though it has
only been known by the current name since 1928.
The area was all but abandoned after the fall of the
Roman Empire for nearly a thousand years until Fredrick
II rebuilt the city as Monteleone. Today, the area
remains prone to geological disturbances.
