Caserta
The city of Caserta is gaining in importance within the world of international
tourism.
Caserta's appeal is due to the magnificent Reggia, or Royal Palace, built in
the 18th century to rival the splendor of Versailles itself. Indeed, the Royal
Palace is considered one of the most marvelous examples of what art and architecture
achieved during the 1700s.
This Royal Palace also led to the creation of a new city, Caserta Nuova (New
Caserta), which literally did not exist before the construction of the Reggia.
This new city is what is referred to when speaking of the city of Caserta.
In contrast, another tourist attraction in the area, is the village of Caserta
Vecchia, or Old Caserta. This village is roughly five miles away from the modern
city and has a distinctly medieval aspect. Visitors love wandering around this
part of Caserta to experience the feeling of being transported back in time.
Caserta Vecchia still conserves many historical monuments dating to the middle
ages.
