Sorrento
Situated on the Bay of Naples and the larger Amalfi Coast, visitors can expect
a great deal of sun and heat each summer, as well as relatively mild winters.
Like many cities on the western coast, Sorrento has Greek origins that date
back to the 7th century BCE, though none of Sorrento's ancient past remains
in the modern town.
However, this well-known town is actually small (fewer than 20,000 residents),
with an economy heavily geared towards tourism – specifically tourists from
the UK. English is very commonly heard, and a cup of Darjeeling is just as ubiquitous
as gelatto.
Neither the swimming nor the sightseeing here is particularly interesting but
the surrounding views and destinations of interest under the imposing figure
of Mount Vesuvius draw many thousands every year to the relaxed side of the
bay.
The surrounding area is steep and warm, with agriculture and agricultural
processing being the chief form of income in the area.
The distinctive local crafts are also found for sale throughout the city (and
especially along the main street of Corso Italia), including complicated wood
inlay, leather goods and red pottery.
Enjoy seafood and pasta dishes at any one of about a million restaurants.
