Bologna Province
The province of Bologna is located in the landlocked
region of Emilia-Romagna and, is home to nearly a million
modern Italians.
This relatively large region is divided into nine small
provinces, and Bologna is in the middle of them all.
Over one-third of the residents of the Bologna Province
live in the namesake capital city, though there are
60 other far less populated towns in this 3,700 square
kilometre province.
The city of Bologna is the provincial and regional
capital. It has been a site of habitation and frequent
conquest since the Villanovans lived there in the early
part of the 1st millennium BC, only to be conquered
by the Etruscans in the 5th century BC. Since the Romans
built the Via Aemilia through town, it has been an important
crossroads at the northern centre of Italy, once being
the second city in Italy after Rome.
The province of Bologna is well known for its meat-based
sauces that it lends its name to as well as cured hams.
