Piacenza Province
This, the most north westerly of the provinces in the
Emilia-Romagna region, borders the Italian Riviera and
is characterized by forests and mountains.
It is a landlocked province with a population of nearly
300,000 people. European tribes have inhabited the
region for a very long time, including the Celts and
Ligurian tribes well before the Romans sent colonists
during the Punic Wars.
Today, the region is best known for its major contribution
to the decorative and fine arts.
The capital city, more commonly known by its Latin
name, Placentia, is home to about a third of the residents
of the province.
Placentia has been an important port on the Po River
and has traditionally been a center of agricultural
trade. From here, the famous pork products of the region
have been exported for centuries. This is the birthplace
of pancetta, salami, and coppa.
The region has several characteristic wines, most notably
the sparkling red wines unique to the area.
