This region is actually an administrative area made
up of 9 provinces that is roughly parallel to the historic
region of Romagna.
The region is rich in farmland, high value cash crops,
processing and fine manufacturing.
Many of Italy’s most profitable companies are based
in the region, though agriculture remains the largest
sector of the regional economy – especially wine production.
Many well-respected estates are found in the interior
provinces.
As such, the nearly 4 million inhabitants of this densely
populated region enjoy a relatively good economy and
high standard of living.
The capital of Bologna and the region as a whole is
known for its world-class university, irresistibly fattening
cuisine full of meats and cheeses and left-leaning politics.
Unlike much of Italy, basketball is the dominant sport
here, though football remains quite popular.
The city has had a vibrant music scene for hundreds
of years and was made a UNESCO city of music in 2006.
