Bologna
This regional capital and its surrounding metropolitan area is home to nearly
half a million people. The city itself is at several crossroads and has been
prominent since founding in the 6th century BCE.
Today it remains very much an Italian city, not all made-up for tourists and
working class.
The city is also well-known for its University – the oldest in Europe – and
much of the youthful nightlife is centred around the University district.
Like any large Italian city, there are plenty of churches, though Bologna's
collection from the Middle Ages are in better shape than most, having escaped
much of the damage seen elsewhere during the 20th century.
Bologna is a very popular city to stop over for an afternoon or a few days,
for some of the famous cuisine, or simply to experience some of the real Italy.
The climate varies quite a bit, and much of the town may be shut down during
the worst of winter winds and the heat of August.
