Forlì
Forlì was most likely founded around the 2nd century BC and has always been
a vibrant center of exchange between the hills, the plain and the sea which
surround it. Its central role in various historical events have endowed it with
a wealth of interesting and beautiful monuments dating to different time periods.
Visitors are encouraged to walk through its irregularly-shaped and fascinating
historical center, with streets that irradiate outwards from the central Piazza
Saffi. Each street will bring you closer to a number of elegant and stylish
"palazzi".
Piazza Saffi itself can be considered both an outdoor museum and art gallery
that displays a multitude of architectural styles.
If you like indoor museums, Forlì won't disappoint you. The different types
of museums present in the city, such as the Archeological Museum and the Ethnographic
Museum, are all interesting and worth a visit.
And let's not forget the churches. One of the architectural jewels of Forlì
is the Basilica di San Mercuriale, with an imposing square bell tower in Lombard
style. This church, as well as others in the city, conserves an enormous number
of precious works of art.
