Trieste Province

This strip of land on the northern part of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia coast is home to many beach resorts with a rich and varied past.  It was known to the Romans as Tergeste.

Today it is, in fact, the smallest province in all of Italy, with an area of only 212 square kilometres.

The province of Trieste is only very tenuously connected to Italy being surrounded by Slovenia on three sides.  You will hear Slovenian regularly spoken as well as local dialects.  Even the cuisine of the area is very Eastern European on display at Italian fairs.

The capital city, also called Trieste, was a very important port for the Austrian-Hungarian Empire and was greatly expanded during the 18th century.

Unlike much of Italy, this region has churches of many religions – a testament to the city’s past (and present) as a major port.

With many kilometres of beaches in either direction, the coastal cities are a fine getaway for those who want the beach without the crowds.

Days Out in the Trieste province
>> Limestone Caves of the Carso Plateau - just outside the capital city, those who enjoy caves will be enthralled with the stark white limestone.  Tours are available

>> Antique Shops of Piazza Unità d’Italia - the streets around this giant seaside plaza in Trieste are crammed with antique shops that will test your shopping skills.

>> Piccola Berlino - these tunnels were once used by Nazi troops when they occupied the province during World War Two.  They may now be toured along with the memorial of Italy’s only Nazi Death Camp.
>> Grotta Gigante - one of the world’s largest natural caverns, this one is large enough to swallow several of the world’s largest buildings.
