Trieste
The region of Friuli Venezia Giulia has historically been the stage for invasions
and cultural mixings. It is a heterogeneous area, with mountains, sea, hills,
plains, uncontaminated nature and important historical settlements all within
100 meters of each other.
The capital city of this region, Trieste, is located in the northernmost part
of the Adriatic Sea, between the water and the Karst Plateau. Its origins are
ancient and it was already an important commercial center at the time of the
Roman Empire.
Indeed, even before the Roman Empire, since the 2nd millennium BC, in fact,
the entire area surrounding Trieste was the center of an important series of
settlements, most likely of Indo-European peoples.
It became a Roman colony in the 2nd century BC and the city was surrounded
by defensive walls.
Important constructions were built by the Romans, such as the Forum and the
Theater, which are still visible today.
Though it presents itself as a modern city, Trieste actually has multiple faces,
due to its varied history and different rulers, and requires full immersion
on the part of tourists to explore its every angle and discover its many surprises.
