This tiny region is a thin strip of land around the
Ligurian Sea. It is chiefly known for the city of Genoa
and is often called the Italian Rivera.
This coast doesn’t freeze and enjoys a steady Mediterranean
climate.
Though the population is located chiefly around the
coast, the interior of the region quickly gives way
to the forested and mountainous lands that account for
fully half the Ligurian lands.
The climate can be quite rainy, with as much as four
times the rainfall of the rest of the surrounding regions.
The region is renowned for its wines and seafood, and
eating is a major pastime here. Several dishes known
in other parts of the world as local cuisine are actual
Genovese in origin, such as the artichoke and egg Torta
Pasqualina.
Genoa itself was made a UNESCO World Heritage site
in 2006.
The population of the region is older than Italy as
a whole due to elderly migration and a low local birth
rate.
