Como Province
This densely populated province in the central Italian
Alpine region of Lombardia has no massive capital city.
Instead, it is a collection of many mid-sized towns.
The province of Como has been inhabited for many thousands
of years, with evidence of Bronze Age settlements.
Various parts of the province have been ruled by nearby
countries for much longer than they’ve been Italian,
most recently by the Austrian-Hungarian Empire.
Because of this, many people in the province are bi-lingual
or even speak German as a first language. For thousands
of years, many famous people have come from this province,
including Pliny (the younger and elder).
The namesake capital city, Como, was once closer to
the mountains, but was moved wholesale by Julius Caesar
around 100BCE.
What was once the fountain at Lake Como’s central square
as purchased by William Rockefeller has been the fountain
in the Bronx Zoo ever since.
Nearby towns generate much of their economy from tourists
enjoying skiing in the Bergamo Alps to the north.
