Ascoli Piceno Province
This seaside province of the Marche Region actually
has a rather small coastline, with it occupying a strip
of land between the Adriatic Coast and the Apennine
Mountains to the west.
The Italian government is in the process of creating
a new province of Fermo that would occupy nearly one
third the territory and population of the current Ascoli
Piceno province. Agriculture remains a very important
economic activity in the province, with olives, fruit
and grain being most prominent.
The service economy has become increasingly important
in recent years , though tourism is a relatively minor
factor in most parts of Ascoli Piceno.
In the capital city of the same name, Ascoli , settled
by the Sabine many centuries before, the Romans conquered
and linked to the city by the very important Salt Road
in the second century BC. Surrounded on three sides
by mountains, the city has nonetheless been invaded
many times, though the ancient buildings still stand.
