Pesaro e Urbino Province

This northerly province of the coastal Marche Region is larger than the others with one small coastline and rolling hills before the Apennine Mountains to the west.

Many people stay in and around the province on their way to the tiny nation of San Marino.  A great deal of local tourism comes from the coastal regions, and there are many beaches crammed into that little strip of the Adriatic Sea.

The capital city of Pesaro is the largest, by far, with nearly 100,000 residents.  Most of the other 67 comuni are much smaller.  Pesaro has been a centre of fishing and seafood since Roman times, but has more recently become known for the production of furniture.

Like most provinces of Italy, Pesaro e Urbino has been conquered many times, though some of the medieval and renaissance remains are the best kept in the world, including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Urbino.

Days Out in the Pesaro e Urbino province
>> Black Truffle Market of Acqualagna - from the mountains of the Apennines in several regional provinces, truffle hunters come to sell their finds.  Local restaurants are famous for their black truffle dishes.

>> Mostra Internazionale del Nuovo Cinema - every year since the 1960s, the capital has hosted an international film festival.  There has also been an opera festival every year since 1980.

>>Palazzo Ducale of Urbino - this ducal palace is home to Galleria Nazionale delle Marche, one of the world’s finest collections of renaissance-era paintings.
>> Majolica Pottery - the clay outside Urbino is known for its uniquely fine properties.  The local artists have turned it into a real art form.
