Pesaro e Urbino Province
This northerly province of the coastal Marche Region
is larger than the others with one small coastline and
rolling hills before the Apennine Mountains to the west.
Many people stay in and around the province on their
way to the tiny nation of San Marino. A great deal
of local tourism comes from the coastal regions, and
there are many beaches crammed into that little strip
of the Adriatic Sea.
The capital city of Pesaro is the largest, by far,
with nearly 100,000 residents. Most of the other 67
comuni are much smaller. Pesaro has been a centre of
fishing and seafood since Roman times, but has more
recently become known for the production of furniture.
Like most provinces of Italy, Pesaro e Urbino has been
conquered many times, though some of the medieval and
renaissance remains are the best kept in the world,
including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Urbino.
