Campobasso Province

This province in the Molise Region occupies the side that faces the Adriatic Sea.

Though the whole region is mountainous and sparsely populated, much of the population lies around the coast or the inland capital city.

A major commodity of the province is agriculture, in the form of dairy (such as the local scamorza cheese) and orchards.  This province is very good for beach holidays.

Of the 84 comuni of the Campobasso Province, the city of Campobasso is, by far, the largest.  The city is famous for high quality steelwork, most especially blades for knives and scissors.  Just outside town is the site of a pitched battle between allied forces and the Nazi army in 1943.  Though the town itself is not particularly picturesque, there is a rather old and foreboding castle on the approach to town.  Many people choose to stay here and strike out into the countryside of the Campobasso province during the day.

Days Out in the Campobasso province
>> Seaside at Termoli - this second largest city in the province is home to a wide, sandy beach and many pre-Roman relics.  Few people stay the night, so it is very quiet after the last train leaves.

>> Villa de Capoa - this restored vacation home just outside the capital city is a lovely home as well as a botanical garden of note.

>>Chamber Music in Bonefro - in this picturesque coastal town, the local school of music hosts concerts for the public by visiting students every summer.
>> Ruins at Saepinum - the Samnites, who later fell to the Romans in the last 3rd century BCE, originally built this town.  There are many ruins from the early days of the Roman Empire that remain here.
