Guides & Maps on Molise

This very tiny region was part of Aburzzio (just to the north and east) for many years until being formally recognized as separate in 1963.

It has the distinction of being one of the least densely populated regions in Italy, though it is growing.

The local economy is dependent upon artesian crafts and subsistence agriculture.

The region is divided into two provinces, with Campobasso on the Adriatic Sea and Isernia on the interior.

The capital city of Campobasso is located in the Mountains along the Biferno River. The local industry of blade and knife making is still respected worldwide.

The only available port that is capable of launching even fishing vessels is located at Termoli.

While many young people have left the area to find jobs, recent renovations to the cities have made it a more attractive place to live, though English-speaking travellers have yet to make much, if any impact, on the region.

Days Out in Molise
>>Sfilata dei Misteri in Campobasso - This celebration of Corpus Cristi is celebrated with an elaborate spectacle of putting real live children into 13 giant, sacred art sculptures that are then paraded around town

>> Beaches of Termoli - Generally unknown outside of Italy, these beaches are sunny and quiet. Stay for dinner and sample some of the local seafood.

>>Isernia - This town is perhaps best known for its archeological history, dating back several thousands of years. Much of the town was rebuilt after being destroyed in World War II.
>> Crypt of San Lorenzo - Located in the village of San Vincenzo al Volturno, the crypt is famous for its ninth century artworks.
