Alessandria Province
Part of the world famous Piemonte (also called Piedmont)
Region of north-western Italy, the province of Alessandria
has a great many comuni (nearly 200) for such a relatively
small area, though many of them are very small.
Agriculture is a very important part of the local
economy and there are a great many rice fields in addition
to the local vineyards and orchards.
The provincial capital and namesake city of Alessandria
is the largest in the province by far. It is located
on the Tanaro River that occasionally floods, as recently
as 1994. The city, as it is today, was probably first
settled by the Lombards in the 12th century, though
it is likely they built it upon another unknown, city.
Since then, the area has become a major railway hub
about 100km from Turin.
