Asti Province

This province of the Piemonte (also known as Piedmont in English) Region of north-western Italy is perhaps most famous for its sparkling wine.

Many of the provinces grapes are white varieties that are not grown at any type of scale anywhere else.

The Province of Asti is landlocked, just north of the Italian Rivera of the Liguria Region.

Though the Asti Province is very small, there are over 100 comuni in the province, littering the countryside with many small towns and villages.

The capital city, also named Asti, is the largest city in the province, by far.  The city was known to the Romans as Hasta and began as a Roman Garrison.  It was linked the regional capital of Turin (or Turnio in Italian) by the major roman road, Via Fulvia, as early as 50BC.  The city is well known as one of the very first free states of Italy, independent since the 11th century, though conquered a few times in the last thousand years.

Days Out in the Asti province
>> Palio d'Asti - every year, the capital city hosts an event where bare-backed horse riders from nearby towns compete in the commemorative event.

>> White Truffle Festival - all year long, the gourmands of Asti throw a little party just to celebrate the love and life of this fungus every weekend, all summer long.  You may buy them raw or dried or, have them prepared in a dish by a local vendor.

>>Giordanino Sweet Shop - the largest and oldest sweet shop in the city of Asti that is full of them is Giordanio.  Here, you’ll find the best selection Torrone (a honey and hazelnut nougat candy) in the province.
>> Winery and Wine-tasting Tours - the rural countryside is famous for the many vineyards that produce fine and unique wines here.
