Asti Province
This province of the Piemonte (also known as Piedmont
in English) Region of north-western Italy is perhaps
most famous for its sparkling wine.
Many of the provinces grapes are white varieties that
are not grown at any type of scale anywhere else.
The Province of Asti is landlocked, just north of the
Italian Rivera of the Liguria Region.
Though the Asti Province is very small, there are over
100 comuni in the province, littering the countryside
with many small towns and villages.
The capital city, also named Asti, is the largest city
in the province, by far. The city was known to the
Romans as Hasta and began as a Roman Garrison. It was
linked the regional capital of Turin (or Turnio in Italian)
by the major roman road, Via Fulvia, as early as 50BC.
The city is well known as one of the very first free
states of Italy, independent since the 11th century,
though conquered a few times in the last thousand years.
