Biella Province
This province in the very northern reaches of the Piemonte
(or Piedmont in English) Region is known as a crossroads
of prehistoric significance, just as it is today, located
between Milano (or just Milan in English) and the regional
capital of Torino (also Turin).
Among the agriculture important in the region are
sheep and grapes. However, much of the area is home
to small-scale manufacturing or hand crafted goods.
The capital city of the province, Biella, is the largest
in the province and is located in the Alpine foothills.
Being on the south side, it is teeming with rivers that
flow all alongside the city and have in the past provided
power and water for local industry.
The area has sites of habitation going back to the
Bronze Age when the rivers were extensively fished.
Today, Biella is a centre of agricultural processing
with much industry given over to the production of wool.
Fine textiles and other manufactured products are
still very prominent as is tourism during the wintersports
season.
