Torino Province
Also known as Turin to the English, this very popular
province in Italy’s north-western Piedmont Region is
actually quite large – the largest in the region with
more than 300 towns or Comuni.
It is famous for wintertime activities in the Alpine
ski resorts. Most famously, it was the site of the
2006 Olympic Winter Games. There are still many Olympic
pavilions in the area that tourists may visit and enjoy.
Being so close to the French and Swiss borders and
having a tumultuous history, there are several languages
(including Italian) spoken in the Turino province, including
the local Piedmontese.
By far the largest city in the province or the region,
Turin (or Torino, as the Italians call it), is home
to nearly a million people, with nearly all the province’s
population living in the greater metropolitan area.
It was built as a military outpost in the 1st century
BCE, and the Roman layout of the central city is still
visible. Located in a dish, surrounded by mountains
and on the Po River, the city has been a major industrial
centre, though often shrouded in fog from the nearby
peaks. Visitors enjoy the very active nightlife of
the area.
