The region, called Piedmont in English, is a large
region in the North-western Italian Alps that is perhaps
most recently famous for hosting the 2006 Winter Olympic
Games in Turino (Turin in English) and the famous shroud
thought to bear the likeness of Christ.
Being just north of the Italian Rivera region of Liguria,
there are plenty of warm days and beaches to choose
from within an hour or two.
Otherwise Piemonte is fairly mountainous to the north,
retreating into plains to the south. But there is far
more to Piemonte than artefacts.
The area is very well known for its cuisine – featuring
one of the most cheese and meat-laden regional menus
in Italy.
The southern part of Piemonte is highly agricultural,
with some of the most fertile rice fields in the country.
Vineyards litter the countryside and over half the
vineyards in the area are recognized as meeting export
standards of greatness that are unique to the area.
