Nuoro Province
This province on the eastern side of the Island of
Sardinia (also known as the Sardegna Region) has a relatively
short coastline and a large interior area with large
agricultural areas and mountains.
It is very sparsely populated and appeals to those
looking for an out-of-the-way vacation on Sardinia.
Part of the province has been recently ceded to the
newly formed Ogliastra Province.
The provincial countryside is mountainous and sparsely
populated. In particular, the Nuoro province is the
least tourist-trodden of the regions of Sardinia and
home to stunning natural beauty.
The capital city of Nuoro (or Nugoro in the local dialect)
is also the largest in the province with over 35,000
residents.
It was created in the 1920s from two smaller towns
that had grown together at the base of Mount Ortobene.
Nuoro has been home to a great many artists and scholars
during its long history as well as an unusual number
of centenarians.
