Ogliastra Province

On the south and central east coast of Sardinia ( Sardegna ).

By far the most mountainous part of the island, it is very sparsely populated (more so than any other province in Italy, with even the largest towns in the region having fewer than 15,000 residents.

Many of the villages of the region are so remote that researchers are using the populations in genetic studies.

Sheep and goats do well on the local mountainsides and a very fine pecorino cheese is made here. Other commodities include olives and a few vineyards.

Lanusei and Tortolì are both capital cities of the Ogliastra province, created in 2005.

Tortolì is located very near the Foddeddu River as well as the Tyrrheanian Sea, with the village of Arbatax serving as the port.

Lanusei is on a ridge overlooking a heavily forested area, famous for its natural amphitheatre and Selene Forest park.

Days Out in the Ogliastra province
>> Cala Goloritzè - this cove is very impressive and secluded from everything. As such, it is only accessible on foot, though there are trails that lead you to it.

>> Black Beach of Coccorocci - this beach is unique in the area for its trademark black sand. Bathers are almost guaranteed privacy here..

>> Rock Climbing at Jerzu - this area is famous for the particularly good and not often used crags in which to practise rock climbing.
>>House of the Olive Museum - the village of Loceri is home to a disused olive oil mill used at the turn of the century that has been converted into a museum dedicated to the lifestyle of olive growers at that time.
