Oristano Province
This province of Sardinia, also known as the Sardegna
Region, is a sparsely populated area on the west central
Mediterranean coast. Much of the area was once covered
by marshes and several towns were created when Moussoulini’s
government dried the wetlands around areas such as the
modern town of Arborea.
Oristano Province is largely known for its seafood
industry and the local dishes are unique. Like much
of Sardinia and Sicily, there are pre-Roman ruins to
be found at several sites.
The capital city of Oristano is the largest in the
province with over 30,000 residents and is situated
on the Tirso River. The city itself hosts regular cultural
events all summer long such as the several annual festivals
that include colourful costumes and parading. The area
near the city has been inhabited for over 3,000 years.
Though it’s not on the ocean, Oristano is very near
the seaside resort town of Torre Grande.
Beyond Torre Grande, stretches the fertile Campidano
Plain that provides much of the province’s agricultural
output.
