Catania Province

This province on Sicily's eastern coast is home to over a million people, the vast majority of whom live in the metropolitan area of the largest and capital city of Catania.

However, there is a great deal to see in this large, often mountainous province.

The capital city, also called Catania, is the second largest in the region with nearly three-quarters of a million residents in the greater Catania metropolitan area. It is very nearly the oldest on the island, with records dating as far back as the 8th century BCE.

As such, there are a great many archaeological objects to be found in the area.

Located very near Mount Etna (the most active volcano in Europe), the city has actually been rebuilt on top of a lava flow.

The modern Catania city has a great many museums and cultural activities though not the congestion and tourism of the slightly larger regional capital of Palermo.

Days Out in the Catania province
>> Roman Amphitheatres of Catania - not one but two outdoor Roman theatres exist in the city. The larger of the two is open to the public and built upon an older Greek structure

>> Fontana dell’Elefante of Catania - this elephant made of volcanic rock has stood in this square for over 500 years, though no one seems to clearly remember why. It's remarkable nonetheless.

>> Palazzo Biscari of Catania - a 17th century palace - often considered among the most beautiful of secular buildings in all of Sicily - and is the site of one of the world's first archaeological museums still open nearly 350 years later.
>>Pistachio Fields of Bronte - one of the largest pistachio plantations in Europe is found here, just outside the small town of Bronte, located just on the other side of Mount Etna from the capital.
