Catania Province
This province on Sicily's eastern coast is home to
over a million people, the vast majority of whom live
in the metropolitan area of the largest and capital
city of Catania.
However, there is a great deal to see in this large,
often mountainous province.
The capital city, also called Catania, is the second
largest in the region with nearly three-quarters of
a million residents in the greater Catania metropolitan
area. It is very nearly the oldest on the island, with
records dating as far back as the 8th century BCE.
As such, there are a great many archaeological objects
to be found in the area.
Located very near Mount Etna (the most active volcano
in Europe), the city has actually been rebuilt on top
of a lava flow.
The modern Catania city has a great many museums and
cultural activities though not the congestion and tourism
of the slightly larger regional capital of Palermo.
