Palermo Province

The best known, largest and very populous province on Sicily's northern coast is also one of the prettiest and most rugged.

There are several beaches to choose from with bright blue waters, and many with white or yellow sand beaches.

The interior is more mountainous than the coastal regions and gives rise to the very active Mt. Etna that can sometimes be seen glowing in the distance.

The area was settled in the 8th century BCE when Greeks arrived at the port of Palermo and began settling outward from there.

The capital city of Palermo is sometimes described as the most contoured city in the world. The city is known for its organized crime though the seafood cuisine is simply superb. Try that or some of the local wines at one of Palermo's seemingly endless restaurants and cafés.

Days Out in the Palermo province
>> Madonie Park - just outside the very small town of Gratteri, you'll find a nature reserve that is home to many endangered botanical species and mountainous views. You'll also find the Gorges of Tiberio that form a waterfall which makes for a nice hike.

>> Museo Archeologico Regionale of Palermo - one of the most comprehensive museums of Greco-Roman history in all of Italy. The permanent collection includes tens of thousand of items

>> Orto botanico di Palermo - largest of all Italian botanical gardens situated in Palermo covers over 22 acres and a great many rare plants – some that are unique
>>Arabic Baths of Cefalà Diana - the only public bath house on the entire island of Sicily and has been fully restored to its 16th century condition. It lies just outside of Palermo in the small town of Cefala Diana.
