Lipari
Lipari is the largest island in the Aeolian archipelago, a group of volcanic
islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The name "Aeolian" derives from the name "Aeolus", who in ancient Greek mythology
was considered Ruler of the Winds and who was believed to have lived on these
islands.
Lipari is also the name of the "commune" that includes the majority of the
islands. Within the commune, there are two active volcanoes, Stromboli and Vulcano.
It has been considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its volcanic phenomena.
Lipari is an increasingly popular tourist destination, mainly thanks to its
amazing waters and beaches. Besides fun in the sun, though Lipari offers interesting
local customs, festivals and cuisine, along with a rich history that dates back
to at least 5000 years ago.Indeed, the Archeological Museum of the Aeolian Islands
is one of the most important in the Mediterranean.
When visiting Lipari, you should also check out the remains of the ancient
Castle, whose origins are still shrouded in mystery.
