Ragusa
Ragusa, also known as "La Terra Iblea", has enjoyed a steady increase
in tourism throughout the past years, mainly thanks to the fact that UNESCO
has listed it among its World Heritage Sites.
Considered "off the beaten path", it also constitutes an excellent example
of ancient rural traditions still kept alive by the spirit of the local population.
As with many Sicilian cities, Ragusa is old and the area surrounding the city
is dotted with archeological remains, many of which have been transported into
various museums.
The city itself is characterized by splendid Baroque-style buildings, including
churches and what were once the homes of the aristocracy. The city also obviously
boasts a rich cultural heritage, with folkloristic celebrations and festivals
occurring throughout the year, complete with locals in costume and traditional
musical performances.
For some fun in the sun, enjoy the clean Ragusa beaches, though for a truly
intimate experience of the city of Ragusa, walk through its ancient streets
and admire the local artisan shops and taste the local cuisine.
