Guides & Maps on Toscana

Just north of the Lazio region that contains Rome, you’ll find the large region of Toscana, or Tuscany as English-speakers pronounce it.

There are ten provinces including the capital of Firenze ( Florence)

Notable as being the former home of the pre-Roman civilization of the Etruscans, Toscana is alternately called Etruria.

The city of Florence has been the cultural centre of the area for many hundreds of years.

Major industries of Tuscany include not only tourism to the various “cities of art” in the region but also, agricultural commodities.

Wine is a very important product here and the famous steaks of Fiorentina are produced in the nearby hills.

The various marble quarries in the region are notable for having produced a very fine-grained marble for so long – thousands of years in some cases.

There are also a great many parks and nature preserves in the area – many of which are accessible where you’re walking through the areas.

Days Out in Toscana
>> Ancient Ruins of Pisa - Not just a leaning tower, this town has a very impressive collection of buildings and works from the Roman-era. While there, take a quick trip and enjoy the regional park of Migliarino, San Rossore, Massaciuccoli.

>> Lucca - Far more relaxed than much of Tuscany, this town is refreshingly different by not being on a main drag and definitely not a hill town.

>> Apuan Alps and Massa Carrara- Of the several “cities of art” Massa Carrara is closest to the source of marble (in the nearby white mountains) and is a great place to view sculpture
>> Elba - There is an archipelago of islands jutting out of the southerly part of the region with the island of Elba being the largest and most famous, having once been the home in Exile of Napoleon Bonaparte.
