Florence (Firenze)
Known worldwide for many centuries as a centre for arts and architecture,
Florence is also a centre of learning and gastronomy.
The city is also known as the the stronghold of the powerful Medici family
that ruled for several hundred years. The Medicis were responsible for bringing
some of the biggest names in the art world to their city.
Built as housing for old soldiers nearly 2,000 years ago, the architecture
of Firenze (in Italian) dates back to the 10th century, when fighting finally
stopped. One of the first sites declared by UNESCO in 1982, the historic centre
of the town is among the best preserved in Italy.
Today, Florence lies just inland from the Italian riviera and nearly a million
people call the greater Florentine area home.
The banking, wine selling and fashion industries are all well-represented here.
As in Rome, the central city does not allow cars, though busses are very common.
Many of the museums and churches charge admission and often sell out if you
don't get there early. The airport is some way from town and shuttle busses
run regularly.
