Guides & Maps on Trentino-Alto Adige

Found today in the northern part of Italy, this region was once part of Austria-Hungary and has been Italian for less than a century.

Both provinces of the region are very mountainous, with the Dolomite Mountains and a southern section of the Alps.

There are fewer people per square kilometer than any other part of Italy, though the region is large enough for nearly 1 million people to call it home.

Most people speak both Italian and German. The regional capital of Trento is a jumble of architectural styles and time periods.

The region has been a crossroads for thousands of years, with the lowest pass through the Alps accessible here.

The Alpine towns and villages that dot the landscape are notable for their Germanic appearance and customs.

Trentino-Alto Adige’s main export is hydroelectric power to the more populous regions to the south.
