This northern region is home to the world-famous city
of Venice.
This European city-state had a tremendous influence
upon the Mediterranean basin and nearby European countries.
However, though the region is small, there’s more to
it than just the city of Venezia, as the locals call
it.
The nearby area is flush with natural beauty and small,
heavily fortified towns.
Throughout the seven provinces that now make up Veneto,
there is a nearly 4,000-year-old history of migration.
Some believe the original inhabitants of the region
may have fled the fall of Troy via the Balkans.
Local inhabitants in the country often supplement
their earnings with self-supporting smallholdings where
they grow vegetables, cool-climate tree fruits and grapes.
The region is quite well developed from an industrial
standpoint and as such, residents enjoy a high standard
of living, even though the region was economically devastated
after World War II.
Tourism continues to be the largest industry, with
over 60 million visitors each year.
